His life was severely affected by the way his parents treated him while growing up. He is over 40 now, but to this day he still has problems that relate back to his childhood. Subjected to emotional abuse in many different forms he lived through criticism, belittlement and being picked on. Chad was treated like an outcast in his own family. Differently from how his parents treated his siblings, they always letting him know, often in subtle ways, that he was not wanted in the family. Sometimes his father would gang up his siblings against him and they would all make fun of him. Emotions towards Chad were cold and disinterested. Growing up he was never hugged by his parents, or told that he was loved. An eon of thought can pass equal to a moment in time. Entering Chad’s story we see him deep in unending thought. Tormented and vulnerable he recalls the sinking feeling once felt within his family home. With a detached, fleeting retrospect his memory visits reminding him of a cold, snowy day as he slipped and fell down his grandmother’s ice filled steps. All pain fell from his mind, heart and body, while his spirit was removed. In this fall he realized he possessed no value and had no protection within his parents’ world. Unaware of Chad’s fall, his father held tightly onto his mother to protect her from the same decent. Wounded and scolded, Chad rose, bruised and bewildered, after sliding down three stories and landing on a pool of concrete. As a child, Chad was horribly neglected and abused, but without support he seldom allows himself to look back at his life’s circumstances. In this brief instant, he is reluctant to feel sorrow for that fright ened young boy. At six years old his heart was broken, while he came to the understanding, that he was alone and responsible for himself. â€Å"We are no more than a hiccup in time, a bleep, a bump, a blunder,† thought Chad as this memory was revisited. He was older now, in his teen years and felt wiser. He learned to live in retrospect. With intent for his own protection he ravenously soaked up all insight and knowledge while living protectively under cover in his so-called bubble. This bubble, created by Chad was the child of the recluse he would become and was now the adolescent predestined turtle still struggling from within. Chad’s first attempts at writing were as a teenager and he takes refuge within his thoughts for the first time. Chad Writes: A Brief Shot My layers have been cutaway. Only comforted, while writing down his feeling, his spirit incorporates a pained soul and lives in isolation and turmoil through day-to-day life. Chad writes: Caged Within my soul, liberation lies beyond the walls of my being and my dwellings. Unable to brake through, I am smothering slowly and painfully, within my existence. I act to be the one who is loved, by the one who stands before me. Leaving me weakened, tired and untruthful. Then I am angered, feeling empty and alone. Caged within my soul. Chad lived and fought through years of abuse. His father full of anger and outrage stood opposed to Chad’s strength of will, personality and shared hatred. This malice grew with obvious disdain and distrust. In hate for his son his father pushed and held a pillow over his face, while intuitively Chad played possum. â€Å"Die,† he whispered while crushing and grasping Chad by the neck. Muttering and cursing, his father slid a trash bag over his head, while forcibly placing his hand over Chad’s mouth. His boyish screams grew raspy and full of fear, as his father tightened his grip. Chad fought and fixed a steady punch and inevitably, he broke free. His wails were wild, like a wolf howling in the night, still no one heard a sound. Chad writes: A Child’s Cry if I lived my life again spent the time I had to spend would you close your eyes and leave me crying if you knew where I had been would you run away and then leave me standing all alone again would you listen to my heart could you mend a broken part would you open up you heart and let me in In these words I say to you can you understand them to can you free my mind and see within though the years have come and gone yet the feelings are still strong of a child left alone and crying Chad found refuge while writing and in his stories he was able to find resolve. As a young adult Chad’s issues, like bricks, felt like obstacles and eventually blocked stubbornly as they weighed heavily and demand his attention. Chad worked to move forward and as he processed past the age of twenty, he fought through many obstacles and battles. Laboring with written words and knowledge he compiled his thoughts and was determined to build shelter, not with straw or stick, but with the bricks that once confined him and that he had carried along the way. The source of power achieved from overcoming and writing about, some of his issues, became the bricks that now protected him. This safety, expressed now, unknowingly, will again, form a border and will no longer shield, or defend. These issues not completely transformed will change structure and once again restrict and entrap, as Chad is in constant repair. Writing in hope that one day others will read his insights, Chad believes his thoughts and ideas could comfort others as they did him. â€Å"Setting Claim,† is what Chad wrote and wished for himself. While believing, it informed others, of the pit-falls of living a naive, superficial life. Chad writes: Setting Claim I will no longer allow others to define who I am. I am now in control of my own ego. This allows me entrance to the gift of self possession and protects me from allowing those with character issues to delegate who I am. I will not again share nor relinquish this power in any attempt to conform. I am setting claim on what is mine. I painfully paid for and earned this possession for myself. Some look at others naively as they live a superficial life. Often there is a lack of experience, judgment, or information. Also it shows a simplistic view of nature or absence of genuine concern. This happens when we are concerned with or comprehending only what is apparent or obvious and having sight only for what is shallow, rather than actual. Many are eager to believe and see only the surface. Producing a lacking of awareness, knowledge, reasoning and depth. Consequently, as individuals conceive only appearance, not character, unfortunately, proceeds with ultimately living a naive, superficial life. While those trapped by others view of self are forced to live a life without the gift of self possession. Chad was in quest of his own self ownership and as he aged past the age of thirty, he continued to write and relate others pain to his own and by sword of pen he made associating insights in hope of solution. This was done by â€Å"plucking out,† as he called it, â€Å"distorted perceptions,† that people live in every day. â€Å"One less wild one,† Chad reveled, believing his insights were answering questions of his own wild unrestrained thoughts. He felt he now contributed to the world and that he had finally found purpose. Solving the equations of the â€Å"wild one’s† brought him peace. Chad was redeemed, born again and was joyful in a freshly discovered, sense of resolve. He basked in the glory of a new found determination and rejoiced in believing he now, produced proof, that he was indeed alive. Chad continues to write and share what he learns through his life. Still, he is unable to live freely and use his insight to his own benefit and breaks down. Chad writes: Break Down When there is no guilt, fear or capacity of happiness, there is no justice. The pain is passed on, and fear is obsolete. Therefore, with nothing to beware of, there are no boundaries. With no one being held responsible, there again is no justice. When we do not learn to break through our frustrations, we then break down, and join in with them. For instance, anger is a honest feeling. With out anger, we would not know when to stand strong for what we believe in. Yet without substance, anger will bring us back around, the growing circle of breaking down. Chad’s life reaches climax after relentlessly being bombarded by his own constant, culminating thoughts and revisiting issues. These issues, even-though solved on paper, continue to haunt in other dimensions. With thoughts hovering like poltergeists, he remains unattached and without the capacity to sort through and provide accommodations that they demand. Without condescension, Chad’s memories live outside his human comprehension, and appear distraught and dirtied by time, while looking for shelter and hauntingly, sputtering around him. An insanity grows, as he does the same things over and over again, expecting different results. Consequently, he is unable to give rest to his repeating thoughts, fears and concerns and he is led into narrative conclusion, without progression and is written within his own predetermined refuge of thought. Chad now lives with his realities, both real and written, blurred. In hope for a cure and for freedom from his own and others self-abs orption he persistently searches for truth and knowledge in the desire of learning something profound. Unaware of his condition, he is captured by predetermined conclusions and predestined to be a recluse. Chad writes: The Damned Isolation standing in demand. Feeling different says I am. With no control of who I am. I live my life to be damned. Prematurely aged, lethargic and typing, he is trapped within writers block and in his own twist of plot. His keys worn weak and his words obscured like the crickets screaming. The design of the study was a randomised, single-blind, placebo controlled, parallel-arm trial. The sample of participants was selected from two outpatient departments in the UK, with a total of 124 study participants in total completing the trial. The participants selected were between 18 and 80 years old, and were all selected on the criteria of having chronic, mechanical neck pain. The study was measured on an outcome basis, with the primary outcome being continued pain after one week of treatment. Secondary outcomes were pain at other time points, score on the neck disability index and the Short Form-36, and use of analgesic medications. Patients received either 8 treatments with acupuncture over the space of 4 weeks or 8 treatments of mock transcutaneous electrical stimulation of acupuncture points. While the acupuncture was found to be effective in relieving the neck pain, it was found not to be clinically signific ant as the placebo group were also found to improve from the baseline. Based on the primary outcome of pain one week after beginning treatment, the study found only a 12% better improvement in those receiving acupuncture than those receiving the placebo. This small percentage was not deemed to be clinically significant despite being classed as statistically so. There were recognised to be limitations in the study, however. Although the treatments were all carried out by one practitioner, the control did not mimic the process of needling, which may have affected the credibility of the placebo. There was also no control by means of a non-intervention group, which could have been used to measure the significance of the treatment in comparison to patients having received no treatment at all for the neck pain. The relationship between economic growth and the environment is debatable. Traditional economic theory posits a trade-off between economic growth and environmental quality. Since the early 1990s, however, the rapidly expanding empirical and theoretical literature has suggested that the relationship between economic growth and the environment could be positive and hence growth is a prerequisite for environmental improvement. But on the other hand, growth could be an affective reason of environmental pollution. This paper depicts the empirical pattern that at relatively low levels of GDP per capita, pollution level (and intensity) initially increases with rising income. The dominant theoretical explanation is that when GDP increases, the greater scale of production leads directly to more pollution, but, at a higher level of income per capita, the demand for health and environmental quality rises with income which can translate into environmental regulation, in which case there tend to be favorable shifts in the composition of output and in the techniques of production. Air pollution can be occurred in two ways-increasing of suspended particular matters (dusts, fumes, mists and smokes) and emission of gaseous pollutants. Among these two components, air pollution due to gaseous pollutants is a severe pollution of modern era. Air pollution is one of the causes of environmental pollution and because of environmental pollution; people face various kinds of fatal diseases which may decrease the productivity level of them. As a result economic development of a country could be hampered. Sustainable development has been one of the alarming concerns in the twenty-first century. It has significant implications on the extent of economic activity in the future. Anderson and Brooks (1996) have given the statement, â€Å"scientific basis supporting the relationship between business activities, resource depletion and the environment has grown stronger in recent years.† Grossman (1995) offers three main explanations as to how air pollution due to economic development affects one country’s environment- First is the â€Å"scale effect of income on the ‘environment’. As more outputs are produced, more inputs are (natural resources included) are required and more wastes and emissions by products are created during the process. Second is the technology composition effect. This refers to the technology as a percent of GDP. Third is the technique effect. Technique pertains to the research and development of a country. Air pollution measurements for eight Asian countries (China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, South Korea, Bangladesh, Singapore, and Thailand) are calculated by collecting the percentage of carbon dioxide emission (per metric ton) and GDP per capita of one particular year from the World Bank data. Dickens presents his criticism of the education for the labouring class in a sarcastic manner. He has created the classroom as a factory. The purpose of the education in Coketown is to root out the innocence and imagination of young children so they will grow into utilitarian robots expecting nothing more than the drudgery of industrial life. Dickens uses specific methods to put his point across of ‘bad education’ by using negative views. This is done with exaggeration because he wants the reader to think the same as what he thinks so it seems like education was extreme and intense. In ‘Hard Times’, the teachers fulfil the excessive teaching skills as they just want the ‘little vessels’ to be filled with facts. Dickens also presents a contrast between two children to show how differently each child gets treated because of their background or their attitude towards things other than facts. Another method that he uses is making the characters stand out through their names to symbolise their personality. Throughout chapters 1-3, Dickens emphasises on the word ‘facts’ because he wants to continuously present and criticise the education for the labouring class. ‘Now, what I want is, Facts. Teach these boys and girls nothing but Facts. Facts alone are wanted in life†¦ ‘ This is the opening sentence of the novel and straight away you have a vague idea of the extremism of teaching. Also the word ‘fact’ is in capital letters and this signifies the importance of learning nothing but facts. The introduction of the teacher has a lot of exaggeration at hand. Thomas Gradgrind is a middle-class, self-made man. ‘A man of realities†¦ a man of facts and calculations’. Dickens has made this character a very hard and cold teacher who knows what he wants from the students. ‘He seemed a kind of cannon loaded to the muzzle with facts†¦ ‘ Dickens uses military imagery to show how the teacher wants to get rid of childhood imagination. ‘He seemed a galvanising apparatus, too, charged with a grim mechanical substitute for the tender young imaginations that were to be stormed away’. Dickens has described this as some sort of physics experiment because ‘galvanising’ is the process named after Galvan in the stimulation of animal tissue by electric currents. But in this case it is the young children that are being stimulated with factual currents. Dickens has made the teacher to be very hard-hearted and cruel and this is to present his criticism on the education for the labouring class because he evidently disagrees with this concept of teaching and he wants the readers to feel the same way by using the different language techniques and this is mostly done through exaggeration.

There are 6 books in the series; I’ve been publishing for about two years now and started seeing some amazing results about 12 months ago, when I started really focusing on building my marketing strategy and on what works. It’s been a very exciting year or so for me.I can imagine. And it’s actually a year ago that I first got in touch with you to present you the idea we had about Reedsy, so I’d say it’s been a gre at year for both of us!Absolutely, yes! It’s great to see so many emerging authors and services to help grow this industry, because it’s such a new market! It’s just great to see all this exciting stuff happening.Exciting is definitely the word! You also have a free webinar on the Your First 10k Readers website that I really enjoyed, especially the first video, because that video starts by effectively setting the right mindset for book marketing. I see many authors out there thinking â€Å"how can I sell my books†, when it should actually all be about adopting a reader’s perspective.Absolutely. I think the problem with a lot of authors, like you said, is that they see marketing as a problem, when marketing can be fun as well! Because when you’re building a real connection with your fans, you get to have that exchange of ideas. Getting emails from people telling you how much they love your books and how they can’t wait for your next on e, every day, is a wonderful feeling.And when you have a next book to launch, knowing that you can launch it into the top 200 on Amazon, go to the top of the charts on your bestseller lists, without having to pay for advertising, that is amazing, because you have this built-in platform that you have direct control over. Whereas if you’re relying on Amazon or other ebook stores, or even Facebook, to do that for you, the rules can change at any minute.That’s because you don’t own that platform: it’s their platform, so they can change the rules. But if you have your own platform, you don’t have to worry about that: you control it, and therefore control your career. So my premium training is all based around how to develop that for yourself and how to build that up, so you can take control over being an author.The webinar you mention are the free videos that I show to people to let them know exactly what they can do to get this process started. There a re currently 3 videos and you can sign up for them at Your First 10k Readers.The first one will essentially take you through how the online retailers work. And this is a big one because most authors think about marketing like old school, traditional marketing that publishers used to do (and some still do), where it’s all about the physical bookstores.It’s nothing like that, because Amazon and the other stores are really search engines. They’re like Google for products, Google for books. And if you don’t understand how a search engine works, how it indexes books and pages and how you can get to the top of those search results, you’re leaving a lot of visibility on the table. So I talk about exactly how to get that right mindset.So how can authors do SEO (Search Engine Optimization)? How should they, for example, decide which keywords to enter for their book?It’s difficult I think, because Amazon and the other retailers don’t publish th eir search traffic. If you’re on Google, you can go to the Google Keywords tool, type some keywords and see how much traffic they get, what the competition is like, etc. Amazon doesn’t do this, they keep it very much to themselves, so you’ve got to be manual about it - you have to use a bit of common sense.The easiest way to do it is to use the search bar at the top of the book page and start typing in some relevant search terms that you think might apply. Amazon will suggest some for you, so you just pick some suggested terms and check out whether the books listed under those terms are selling well. If they are, it’s a good keyword, so you have to determine whether you can compete at that level of sales. So if you’re currently selling one copy a day, you don’t want to be in a keyword pool of books that are selling hundreds of copies a day. It’s a lot of manual work, trial and error, but keywords are so important.Do your recommend cha nging them often and testing/iterating?It depends, I don’t change mine that often. If I see my sales drop, I’ll go back and check, but really there is no kind of set that you want to change them out, there’s no magic answer.One post I really liked on your blog was the one about readers magnets. Because often, I finish an indie book and I read something like â€Å"we indie authors rely on reviews/on our newsletter, so please leave a review/subscribe to my newsletter†, and that to me is not a real incentive. You, however, offer a real incentive. Can you tell us more about these reader magnets?Yes, you’ve got to think about what the benefit is for the reader. Because if you put a call to action at the end of your book like â€Å"buy the next book† or â€Å"subscribe to my mailing list† or â€Å"leave a review†, the reader’s thinking: â€Å"what’s in it for me? Why should I do that?†I mean, some people will do it, of course, but most people will just completely ignore that. What you have to do to get more results is offer the reader something for them, something of value, to get them to take action. And personally I’d rather have them subscribe to my mailing list than anything else. Because if you get their email address and get their consent for you to contact them in the future, you can ask them for reviews or sales later on down the line, when you’ve built up that brand and that relationship. And this is where reader magnets really come in.Reader magnets are basically something of value that you give to your readers in exchange for an email address.That has made a tremendous difference. We’re talking more than a 1000% increase in signups, just from doing that. I offer them a book as a magnet, a full book (either another book in the series, or a related book if it’s a non-fiction book), but you don’t have to offer a full book, you can offer bonus chapt ers, deleted scenes; or in non-fiction: cheat sheets, case studies, videos, anything you want as long as it’s related to the book that the reader has just finished.It just makes all the difference because with reader magnets you’re thinking about what is in it for your readers, not what’s in it for you.Exactly, I think that is definitely the key in marketing. And it’s funny because in January, we’ve seen a couple of indie author stars like Hugh Howey or Joanna Penn posting videos about their reading habits and how they find their next reads. It shows that they have this right mindset: they easily put themselves into their readers’ shoes because they are readers themselves.Absolutely, and they build a connection with their readers that way. I’m always going to make as much effort as possible to build a connection with readers, because from a reader’s point of view, you’ve got a book out there but they have no idea who you are, they don’t know what your life story is, what their personality is, all they know is your book.If you’re publishing videos like Joanna Penn and Hugh Howey, you really build that connection and readers start to understand who you are as a person. And then they’re much more likely to buy from you because they’re invested in your success: they feel like they know you.Another great thing about indie authors is the community they’ve built, and the collaborations that emerge between authors. You’ve been working very closely yourself with Matt Iden, another author in your genre, right?I think collaboration is absolutely key, because this kind of old school mentality of â€Å"book launch is the be all and end all† is gone, you know. It used to be that where your book didn’t sell 20 or 30 thousand copies in the first three months, your publisher would either drop you or reduce your advances, or be less invested in marketing your n ext book. The indie mentality is different because we don’t rely on huge sales in the beginning, we can be happy with a few hundred sales in the first month, or a few dozen, or even ten!We’re not â€Å"in competition†, because we don’t have to compete for shelf space with this or that bestseller during launch week: we’re available forever. So we can actually work with other authors to benefit everybody because in the end we all have the same objective, which is to reach more readers and get our work out into the world. And there’s no reason we can’t do that together: I email out my audience all the time, and if I’ve got nothing of my own to promote, I’ll recommend other authors’ books. I want my readers to trust me so if I can give them something good to read that’s a great way of doing it!Another thing I wanted to discuss was your brand, that you’ve built across the years, and that is particularly e vident in your covers. Would you say that branding is one of your selling points or is it just there to support your other marketing activities?Branding is very important because it basically means that your readers know what to expect. Your name is a brand, so if someone is going to read the next Nick Stephenson book, they should understand what that’s going to be like.From a visual point of view, having those covers, almost identical across the series, means that when they’re scrolling through a list of books, they immediately know it when they see a Nick Stephenson book. And if they look at it, they’ll see the â€Å"also bought† at the bottom of the page and there will be all my covers lined up. And on my website they can see them in a banner too. It creates a very strong visual trigger that gets people excited about looking at your books.One of the most important things you should do is have a nice, professional cover, and if you’re writing in a series, having those covers match as closely as possible can make a very big difference.Do you do â€Å"perma-free† on the first book in the series?Yes, I do, and there is a reason for this. We talked about ebook stores being like search engines, right? Well, this is like any other online business, you need two things: traffic, and conversion (turning traffic into customers).Perma-free is a wonderful way to get traffic, because you can get 50x to 100x more downloads on a book if it is free, compared to if it was even 99c. Then, if you’re smart about it, you can find ways to convert that traffic into paying customers (using reader magnets, typically).Even if you don’t do perma-free you can do regular free promotions if you’re enrolled in KDP Select, and use those 5 days every 90 days when your book is free to really promote it. You’ll get subscribers that way that you can then lead on to your other books. It just makes a huge difference.One thing I’ve noticed in the latest numbers you disclosed about your expenditures for your books, is that you’re not afraid to spend money as long as it brings more back. I’ve heard that you’ve even tried Facebook ads, is that right?Yes, I do, even if I didn’t include it in the breakdown (I’d only been doing it for a couple of months). It’s like anything, you know, if you want to take your business to the next level, you’re not going to be able to do it using free marketing tools, or a $5 add.I’m not saying that you cannot have sales without paid marketing, I’ve started making serious money from publishing without really spending that much money. But you hit a plateau pretty quickly. And if you want to go to the next level, you really need to think about how you can invest in your own business.Then, it’s not about cost, it’s about how much value that investment is going to bring. If it’s going to earn you money, save you money, or save you time, then it’s a good investment.Facebook ads have been absolutely incredible. Aiming it at my non-fiction author marketing side of things (and advertising my free Reader Magnets book), I’m getting subscribers through Facebook ads that cost me around a dollar, but they’re earning me around $15, so it’s just an incredible amount of ROI. I actually don’t think that will last forever, Facebook will catch on to how much money people are making through this, and prices will go up. There are people to whom we are grateful for the way the world we live in looks like. One of those people is Rosa Parks. She is notable for an action which led to the racial equality nowadays. Rosa Parks was soon bailed out of prison, but she convinced herself that this was the last time she would be humiliated in the public transport. Her friend Edgar Nixon, the president of Montgomery chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, decided to use this situation to start a bus boycott in Montgomery. The aim was to abolish segregation laws at least in the public transport in Montgomery. The boycott lasted for 381 days, and in 1956 the Supreme Court deemed that the segregation on the public transport was unconstitutional. Rosa Parks is regarded to be the â€Å"Mother of Civil Rights Movement.† However she feels a little bit modest about it: â€Å"Four decades later I am still uncomfortable with the credit given to me for starting the bus boycott. I would like (people) to know I was not the only person involved.
